A Message from our Director

Spectrum Services Queensland Clinical Psychologist Director Lisa Brice

Spectrum Services is more than just a clinic, it’s a deeply personal mission. My brother Craig was born in 1969. He was curious, gentle, and deeply misunderstood. He found great comfort in being at home, as my parents worked tirelessly to understand and support him. We knew that linen shirts felt unbearable on his skin, and that family events left him overwhelmed and distressed. Back then, we didn’t have the word ‘Autism’ to help us make sense of why life was so challenging for him. It wasn’t all bad, with the support of my parents he found joy taking deep dives into Lego, and later, Scouts and sailing, places where he could pursue his interests with passion and purpose.

School was often overwhelming and isolating for Craig. Some teachers along the way were incredibly compassionate and accommodating, while others simply didn’t understand. The bullying over the years was relentless and left him anxious, withdrawn, and unsure of where he belonged. Mum was his best friend.

Craig wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood. By then, the damage from years of exclusion and misunderstanding had taken its toll. Without the support and insight that could have helped him thrive, he lost hope, and we lost him. After his death, I returned to university to complete a Masters and Doctorate in Psychology in New York. Together with my parents, we established Spectrum Services as a legacy for Craig and for every other child, teenager, or adult like him.

My parents unwavering love for Craig, and their determination to create a world where children like him would be seen, supported, and celebrated, are the foundations upon which this service was built.

At Spectrum Services we believe that neurodivergent people don’t need fixing, they need understanding, accommodation, and the chance to shine exactly as they are. Here, we work to create the kind of support Craig deserved. Our team takes a neuroaffirming approach to care, grounded in compassion, curiosity, and the belief that difference is not a deficit, but something to be valued.

I feel incredibly lucky to work alongside the clinicians at Spectrum Services. They are a team of thoughtful, skilled, and passionate professionals who share this mission and show up every day with heart and hope. Their commitment to respectful, inclusive, and person-centred care continues to inspire me.
